NiMet forecasts cloudiness, thunderstorms across nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted a mix of sunshine, cloudiness, and isolated thunderstorms across the country from Monday to Wednesday.

According to the agency’s weather outlook released in Abuja, sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected over most parts of the northern region on Monday, with isolated thunderstorms and light rains likely in parts of Taraba and southern Kebbi during the morning hours.

Later in the day, moderate rains and thunderstorms are expected in parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kaduna, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kebbi, and southern Sokoto states.

NiMet also forecast cloudy skies with spells of sunshine over the central region, with morning thunderstorms and moderate rains likely in Niger, Benue, Plateau, and Kogi states, extending later in the day to the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, and Nasarawa.

For the southern region, a cloudy atmosphere is expected with light morning rains in parts of Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Imo, Ebonyi, and Abia states, followed by isolated thunderstorms later in the day across most parts of the region.

On Tuesday, the agency predicted sunny skies with patches of clouds over the North during the morning, with isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains in Kaduna, Taraba, Bauchi, southern Kano, southern Jigawa, and Adamawa states later in the day.

Similar conditions are expected in the central region, with morning rains in Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, the FCT, Niger, and Benue, while the southern region will experience cloudy conditions and morning rains across Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom.

By Wednesday, NiMet anticipates sunny skies with patches of clouds over the northern region, and isolated thunderstorms in parts of Taraba, Kaduna, and Adamawa. The central region is expected to experience a cloudy atmosphere with chances of thunderstorms and light rains in Niger, Kwara, and Benue during the morning, extending to Kogi, Nasarawa, and the FCT later in the day.

The southern region will remain cloudy, with thunderstorms and moderate rains likely over Cross River, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa.

NiMet advised the public to exercise caution during rainfall, secure loose objects to prevent damage, and disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms. It also urged farmers to avoid applying fertilisers and pesticides immediately before rainfall to prevent nutrient leaching and advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather updates for flight planning.
