Manchester United winger Amad Diallo has returned to his native Ivory Coast following the death of a close family member, the club confirmed on Friday.

The 21-year-old, who has featured prominently in United’s recent matches, was granted compassionate leave and will be unavailable for selection in the club’s upcoming Premier League fixtures.

In a statement, Manchester United said: “Everyone at Manchester United sends their deepest condolences to Amad and his family at this difficult time. The thoughts and prayers of the club, his teammates, and the fans are with him.”

Amad’s absence is a setback for manager Erik ten Hag, who has relied on the Ivorian’s pace and creativity on the right wing since his return from loan spells. The winger had been in good form, contributing both goals and assists in United’s campaign.

Ten Hag expressed his support for the player, saying: “Family always comes first. Amad knows he has the full support of the coaching staff, the players, and the club. We will give him all the time he needs before coming back.”

The loss comes as United prepares for a busy run of fixtures, including a league clash this weekend and a midweek European tie. While the club has depth in attacking options with Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and Jadon Sancho available, Amad’s recent performances have made him a key figure in the squad.

Fans have also taken to social media to express their sympathy. One supporter wrote: “Stay strong Amad, football can wait. Our thoughts are with you and your family.” Another added: “The whole United family is behind you.”

Amad joined Manchester United in January 2021 from Atalanta and has since developed into one of the promising young talents in the squad. His journey has also included loan spells at Rangers and Sunderland, where he impressed with his consistency and flair.

For now, the club has not given a timeline for his return, emphasizing that the player’s well-being is the priority.
