Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo enjoyed a dream debut for Charlton Athletic, producing a Man of the Match performance as his new club defeated West Ham United 2–1 in the EFL Championship.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper made eight saves at the London Stadium, playing a crucial role as Charlton held on for a memorable away victory. One of his biggest moments came in the 38th minute when he produced a flying save to preserve Charlton’s advantage.
What makes the performance even more impressive is that Okonkwo had only joined Charlton two days earlier. He arrived from Wrexham on a season-long loan after making 39 appearances for the Welsh club last season.
Okonkwo had been an important part of Wrexham’s rise through the English football pyramid, helping the club secure back-to-back promotions before making their Championship promotion playoff push last season.
His move to Charlton gives him another opportunity to establish himself at Championship level, and his first appearance could hardly have gone better.
Against West Ham, Okonkwo provided the composure Charlton needed at the back, repeatedly denying the hosts and helping his side secure all three points.
For the Nigerian international, it was a statement debut: eight saves, a 2–1 win and the Man of the Match award just 48 hours after arriving at the club.
