Action Alliance presidential candidate Adekunle Omo-Aje has urged political parties, INEC and security agencies to protect the 2027 elections.

Omo-Aje made the call in Abuja after signing the National Peace Accord with other presidential candidates and party leaders on Tuesday.

In a statement issued in Kaduna on Wednesday, Omo-Aje said the accord would help protect Nigeria’s electoral process.

He urged political parties to respect the agreement. He also called for peaceful campaigns without thuggery, hate speech or ethnic and religious incitement.

“INEC must resist pressure and ensure that the votes of Nigerians count. The Commission should provide a level playing field for all parties, big or small,” Omo-Aje said.

Omo-Aje also urged security agencies to remain professional and non-partisan during the election period.

“Our security agencies must protect lives and property before, during, and after the elections. They must not be used to intimidate voters or favour any political party. Professionalism is key to credible elections,” he said.

He said Nigeria’s democracy would grow stronger when state institutions work independently.

Omo-Aje also urged political leaders to put citizens’ welfare ahead of the pursuit of power.

The Action Alliance candidate called on political parties to focus their campaigns on issues that affect Nigerians.

He warned against inflammatory statements that could create tension and divide the country.

The National Peace Committee organised the accord in partnership with The Kukah Centre. Former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar chairs the committee.

The agreement commits political actors to peaceful and issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.

It also seeks to prevent political competition from causing violence before, during and after the polls.

The signing ceremony took place at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.

The event came a day before campaigns officially began for the presidential and National Assembly elections.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, signed the accord.

APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda also signed on behalf of the ruling party.

Other signatories included SDP presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo and representatives of several political parties.

They included the Labour Party, African Democratic Congress, Democratic Leadership Alliance, National Democratic Party, National Rescue Movement, Youth Party, Young Progressives Party and Zenith Labour Party.
