Former AC Milan captain and Italy football legend Franco Baresi has died at the age of 66.
The news was confirmed on Friday by football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano in a post on X.
Baresi spent his entire professional career at AC Milan, making more than 700 appearances for the Italian giants between 1977 and 1997.
During his remarkable 20-year spell at the club, he won six Serie A titles, three European Cups, four Italian Super Cups and two Intercontinental Cups.
His leadership, consistency and defensive brilliance earned him a place among the greatest defenders in football history.
Romano paid tribute to the former captain, writing:
“Sad news from Italy as Franco Baresi has passed away this morning at 66 years old.
“An absolute legend of the game with AC Milan and Italy, marking an era for different generations.
“Thoughts and prayers with the family and friends. Rest in peace, Franco.”
Baresi also enjoyed an outstanding international career with Italy.
He made 81 appearances for the Azzurri and helped the national team win the 1982 FIFA World Cup.
Twelve years later, he captained Italy to the 1994 FIFA World Cup final, where the team finished runners-up after losing to Brazil in a penalty shootout.

He leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of the finest defenders ever to play the game and one of AC Milan’s greatest icons.
