Xabi Alonso Confident Morgan Rogers Will Boost Chelsea

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso believes new signing Morgan Rogers will improve the team and strengthen the club’s attack.

The Blues signed Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million ($157 million). The transfer made the England international the most expensive British player in football history.

Alonso Welcomes New Signing

Alonso praised Rogers ahead of Chelsea’s pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers.

“It’s a great signing,” Alonso said.

“We needed an important player in that position. There were not many better options than Morgan.”

He added that everyone at the club was pleased to complete the deal.

Rogers Can Form Strong Partnership

Meanwhile, Alonso said he already has a clear plan for the 23-year-old.

He believes Rogers and Cole Palmer can build a strong partnership in Chelsea’s attack.

“I have a plan. I have an idea. I can see them linking really well,” Alonso said.

In addition, the Chelsea manager stressed the need for balance across the team.

According to Alonso, the squad needs players who can keep possession. It also needs creative players who can attack with freedom.

As a result, Chelsea should become stronger both in attack and defence.

Competition for Starting Places

However, Rogers will face competition for a starting place.

Chelsea’s attacking options also include Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda.

Even so, Alonso believes Rogers’ versatility gives him an advantage.

“He can play behind the striker. He can also play on the right or cut in from the left,” Alonso said.

Furthermore, the Chelsea boss said playing Rogers in his best position will help him build strong partnerships with his teammates.

Chelsea will continue their pre-season tour against Tottenham Hotspur in Sydney. After that, the Blues will travel to Hong Kong to face Juventus on August 5.
