The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday. The state will mark the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, announced the decision on Monday. He said the government made the declaration to honour Muslim faithful in the state.

The Hijrah marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622AD. It also marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.

Oyelade said the state recognises the spiritual importance of the occasion. He added that the holiday shows respect and solidarity with the Muslim community.

He urged residents to use the day for prayer and reflection. He also called for peace, unity, and development in Oyo State and Nigeria.

He encouraged citizens to reflect on the lessons of the Hijrah. These include sacrifice, faith, and community harmony.

The government said the holiday applies to all public institutions in the state. Residents will join Muslims worldwide in observing the new Islamic year.
