A devastating fire outbreak has destroyed 2,275 bags of onions worth an estimated 56.8 million in Kojiyo community, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, leaving farmers in heavy financial loss.

The inferno reportedly engulfed about 65 traditional storage huts used for preserving onions, wiping out a major portion of the community’s harvest. Although no lives were lost in the incident, residents said the fire started in the afternoon and burned for several hours before it was eventually brought under control.

Farmers described the incident as a major setback, as onion production is their primary source of livelihood. Many of the affected farmers were left counting losses running into millions of naira, with some expressing concern over how to recover ahead of the next farming season.

Authorities and local agricultural associations have since been called upon to provide support to the victims, while the cause of the fire is yet to be officially determined.
