Residents and stakeholders in Onitsha gathered to honour outgoing Area Commander, Chidiebere Nzota, after his promotion.
Nzota recently rose to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). He also received a transfer as part of the promotion.
The event took place on Sunday at the Area Command premises.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 13, Abayomi Oladipo, decorated Nzota with his new rank.
Many residents described the promotion as well deserved. They praised his service and leadership during his time in Onitsha.
Stakeholders Praise Security Gains
Several community leaders spoke at the ceremony. They highlighted Nzota’s role in improving security in the commercial city.
The Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Chijioke Okpalugo, said Nzota restored confidence in the area.
He noted that insecurity had once disrupted business and social life. However, he said the situation improved under Nzota’s leadership.
Civil Society Commends His Impact
The Anambra State Chairman of the Civil Liberties Organisation, Vincent Ezekwueme, also praised the officer.
He described Nzota as a dedicated commander who made a lasting impact.
According to him, Nzota reduced crime without losing any officer during operations.
Colourful Send-Off Ceremony
The ceremony attracted traders, civil groups, and security stakeholders. It also featured tributes from officers and community members.
Guests presented gifts to Nzota in appreciation of his service.
In addition, cultural displays, including a masquerade performance, added colour to the event.
Nzota’s wife, Angela Nzota, thanked God for the promotion and described her husband’s career as one guided by dedication and compassion.
She also expressed appreciation for the support shown by the community.
In his remarks, Nzota thanked residents for the honour, said his transfer reflects the demands of national service and assured the community that his relationship with them will continue.
The ceremony ended with prayers and goodwill messages for his success, with Many attendees wishing him well in his new role as Deputy Commissioner of Police.
