A Nigerian national has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the United Kingdom after being found guilty of the brutal murder of a woman in Leicester.
The 24-year-old, Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, violently attacked and killed 56-year-old Nila Patel in the late afternoon of Tuesday, June 24, 2025, along Infirmary Road in Leicester.
According to a statement released by Leicestershire Police, the tragic incident occurred just minutes after Ahanonu crashed his car while driving dangerously under the influence of cannabis.
Police said he had been swerving across lanes, running traffic lights, and even driving towards a bus stop where people were waiting, as well as pedestrians crossing the road.
Following his arrest, officers discovered that Ahanonu had been smoking cannabis and was in possession of dealer bags of the substance inside his vehicle.
Nila Patel, described by her family as a “beautiful, vibrant soul” and “one of the most kind-hearted people you could ever meet,” had just alighted from a bus and was walking home when the attack happened.
Her death has since sent shockwaves through the Leicester community, with tributes pouring in for the beloved mother and community member.
Authorities say the case highlights the dangers of drug-impaired driving and random acts of violence, reaffirming the need for strict enforcement and public awareness.
