Tyler Perry has ruled out marriage, saying his concerns about divorce have shaped his decision to remain unmarried.

The 57 year old actor and filmmaker made the revelation during an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, where he discussed his personal views on relationships while promoting his latest film, Why Did I Get Married Again?

Perry explained that marriage itself does not trouble him. Instead, he worries about the financial consequences that can follow a divorce. He pointed to people he knows who achieved financial success but later lost their wealth after their marriages ended. “I’m never marrying. It’s not the marriage that bothers me. It’s the divorce. Everybody that I know that did well and went broke, it was because of the divorce, so I’m good just being free,” Perry said.

His comments offer a personal contrast to his career, which has often explored love, marriage, infidelity and divorce. His Why Did I Get Married franchise, which began in 2007, examines the challenges couples face as they navigate relationships and commitment.

Perry shares an 11 year old son, Aman, with his former partner, Gelila Bekele. The filmmaker has also recently spoken about changing priorities as he grows older. In a separate interview, he revealed plans to move to Puerto Rico with his son in early 2027 and reduce his demanding Hollywood workload.

For Perry, spending more time with his son and enjoying a quieter life now take greater priority. Although he has made his position on marriage clear, his comments centre on the risks he associates with divorce rather than a rejection of love itself.
