A former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Usman Yusuf, has warned Nigerians against voting for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections, describing such a decision as “suicidal.”

Prof. Yusuf made the remark while appearing on Daily Politics, a programme on Trust TV. He spoke about the current political climate and the growing wave of defections among politicians.

According to Yusuf, many governors and political leaders believe their future depends on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling party.

However, he said the outcome of the 2027 election will be decided by ordinary Nigerians, not political elites.

“Even if all the 36 governors move to APC, they cannot guarantee victory in 2027. What you need is the endorsement of the people,” he said.

Yusuf alleged that politicians often try to persuade opposition figures to join the ruling party with promises of financial rewards and political protection.

“I finished my term, and they asked me to join APC. They said they would give me billions as my retirement fund,” he claimed.

The former NHIS boss also criticised the state of governance in the country. He accused the government of showing little sensitivity to the economic hardship facing Nigerians.

He listed insecurity, hunger, and corruption as major challenges confronting the nation. According to him, maintaining the current political direction could worsen the situation.

“Voting for APC in 2027 will be suicidal. Do Nigerians want four more years of insecurity, hunger, and corruption?” he asked.

Yusuf also criticised the 10th National Assembly. He described it as ineffective and accused lawmakers of acting as a rubber stamp for the executive arm of government.

He urged Nigerians not to feel discouraged by the ongoing defections among politicians. According to him, voters remain the ultimate decision-makers in a democracy.

“Do not be rattled by politicians decamping like a yo-yo. Get your PVCs ready. In 2027, it is the Nigerian people who will decide,” he said.

Yusuf also called on Nigeria’s security leadership to prioritise support for troops fighting insecurity across the country.

According to him, soldiers are ready to defend the nation but need stronger support and leadership from the government.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to participate actively in the electoral process and vote based on competence and national interest.
