Leaders across the Niger Delta have renewed calls for greater political inclusion and stronger democratic institutions.
They made the call during the Niger Delta Women Conference 2026. The event focused on women’s role in peace, governance, and development.
The conference carried the theme: Empowering Niger Delta Women for Enhanced Political Inclusion, Peace and Development.
Former First Lady Patience Jonathan chaired the event.
She urged women to reject second-class status in politics and public life. She encouraged them to assert themselves and seek leadership positions.
Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, pledged support for policies that promote women’s participation.
Ngozi Odu, Deputy Governor of Rivers State, also backed efforts to expand women’s leadership across the region.
Both leaders promised to support reforms that empower women in governance.
Women Seen as Drivers of Peace and Development
Speakers linked political inclusion to peace and regional stability. They stressed that women play a key role in shaping lasting development.
Participants agreed that gender equality remains vital for sustainable growth in the Niger Delta.
The Niger Delta Women Conference 2026 ended with a call for governments and civil society groups to remove barriers that limit women’s participation in politics.
