The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned that visa fraud and travel overstays by Nigerians could lead to tougher scrutiny for future visa applicants.
In a statement posted on X, the United States Mission in Nigeria said it operates a strict screening process to protect the integrity of the U.S. visa system, stressing that fraudulent activities are taken seriously.
The mission noted that actions by a small number of applicants often result in increased checks for all visa seekers.
It also encouraged Nigerians to report suspected visa fraud through appropriate channels.
Despite the warning, the mission said many Nigerians continue to engage legally with the United States as professionals, temporary workers, entrepreneurs, and investors.
Earlier this month, the mission raised similar concerns, pointing to repeated visa overstays by Nigerian travellers as a key factor limiting future opportunities for other applicants.
U.S. consular authorities have long expressed concern over visa fraud linked to a minority of applications from Nigeria.
These concerns have previously led to policy changes, including shorter visa validity periods and more extensive background checks.
According to the United States Department of State. the measures are aimed at safeguarding the U.S. immigration system and ensuring fair access for legitimate travellers.
