Nigeria has endorsed proposed institutional reforms of the African Union on peace, security and democratic governance.
The endorsement was conveyed by Vice President Kashim Shettima on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.
Shettima spoke at the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Nigeria supported reforms aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and improving cooperation with financial institutions and the private sector.
The country also backed measures to boost domestic and regional resource mobilisation for affordable development financing across Africa.
On peace and security, Shettima praised the decision to establish a Combined Maritime Task Force for the Gulf of Guinea.
He said Nigeria would support the task force with infrastructure, equipment and temporary staff to ensure effective maritime security operations.
The Vice President stressed the need to curb the spread of small arms and light weapons in the region.
Nigeria also supported a review of membership criteria for the Peace and Security Council to improve coordination and effectiveness.

On democracy, Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for efforts to prevent unconstitutional changes of government on the continent.
He announced Nigeria’s endorsement of the African Union’s decision to lift the suspension of Gabon and Guinea.
Shettima said Africa’s mineral resources should drive industrialisation through local processing, manufacturing and technology development.
He called for increased investment in agriculture, storage, logistics and climate-resilient farming to support smallholder farmers.
The Vice President assured the African Union of Nigeria’s commitment to implementing the approved reforms.
