Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has called on Nigerians to abandon the practice of zoning political offices based on regional considerations, insisting that leadership positions should be determined by competence and character instead.
Speaking to newsmen in Abuja, Sowore argued that the country’s political system would improve if Nigerians prioritised merit over ethnicity or geographical balancing in electing leaders.
According to him, political offices should be “zoned to competence” and occupied by individuals with proven integrity and capacity to deliver good governance.
The former presidential candidate maintained that focusing on character and ability rather than regional identity would help strengthen national unity and improve leadership outcomes across the country.
Sowore’s comments come amid ongoing debates over zoning and power rotation ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political stakeholders divided on whether key offices should continue to rotate among regions.
