Nigerian Afrobeats singer Shoday has released the official video for his latest single, “MOVE,” drawing attention for its striking resemblance to Childish Gambino’s acclaimed 2018 music video, “This Is America.”
The two-minute release combines energetic dance sequences with tense and symbolic scenes that create a dramatic visual experience.
Shoday released “MOVE” on September 9 as he continues to build momentum under 5K Records and Sony Music UK.
The song follows his earlier releases, including “Paparazzi,” as well as his HYBRID album, which helped strengthen his profile in Nigeria’s growing Afrobeats scene.
The video uses a warehouse setting and features several images that closely echo the visual language of “This Is America.” These include a hooded figure, gun-related scenes, sudden shifts between dance and tension, and characters moving through a chaotic environment. Shoday also co-directed the video, giving him a direct creative role in shaping its visual direction.
Some viewers have welcomed the similarities as a bold homage to Gambino’s work. Others, however, have criticized the video for appearing too close to the original concept. One of the scenes drawing attention shows a lawyer grabbing a gun, which has sparked discussion among fans about whether the reference works as creative inspiration or crosses into imitation.
Despite the mixed reactions, “MOVE” has placed Shoday back in the spotlight and added another visually ambitious project to his growing catalogue. The release also shows how Nigerian artists continue to experiment with global music-video styles while developing their own creative identities.
