The cost of filling a Toyota Corolla fuel tank in Nigeria has increased sharply over the years. New data shows how fuel prices have changed across different administrations.

An average Corolla has a 50-litre tank. The cost of filling it has moved from a few thousand naira to over ₦60,000 today.

Fuel Costs Across Administrations

Data shows steady increases over time:

  • During the era of Olusegun Obasanjo, it cost about ₦3,750 to fill the tank.
  • Under Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the cost dropped slightly to ₦3,250.
  • During Goodluck Jonathan, it rose to around ₦4,250.
  • Under Muhammadu Buhari, the price jumped to about ₦11,900.
  • Today, under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it costs about ₦61,350.

What Is Driving the Increase?

Several factors explain the sharp rise:

  • Removal of fuel subsidies
  • Exchange rate pressure
  • Global oil price changes
  • Rising distribution costs

These factors have pushed petrol prices higher in recent years.

Impact on Nigerians

Higher fuel costs have increased transport fares and living expenses. Many households now spend more on energy and mobility.

Small businesses also face higher operating costs. This has added pressure on prices of goods and services.

Fuel prices may remain unstable in the short term. Much depends on government policy, exchange rates, and global oil markets.

For now, Nigerians continue to adjust to higher energy costs.
