Lagos: Customs Arrest 71-year-old Cocaine Suspect

The Nigeria Customs Service arrested a 71-year-old man with 6.35 kilograms of cocaine worth about ₦2.35 billion.

Officers found the drugs hidden in a Toyota Highlander along the Lagos-Abidjan corridor.

According to Comptroller Gambo Aliyu, the arrest followed targeted intelligence. He added that officers tracked the vehicle before stopping it. During a briefing, he showed the seized items to journalists in Ikeja.

Meanwhile, Aliyu said the unit stepped up operations across Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, and Ondo states. A result , officers foiled many smuggling attempts within eight weeks.

They seized goods worth over ₦5.5 billion. In addition, the items included rice, used vehicles, fuel, oil, poultry products, and tyres.

The team also recovered ₦97.7 million from unpaid duties. This came after strict enforcement and compliance checks.

Furthermore, the unit launched “Operation Hawk” to fight drug trafficking.

Through this effort, officers seized large amounts of synthetic cannabis and other drugs. They handed the drugs to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for investigation.

At the same time, authorities moved to handle other dangerous items. They will transfer the seized mercury to environmental agencies for safe disposal.
