Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, are preparing for a historic showdown against Japan in Saturday’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final in Morocco, having secured the country’s first-ever appearance in the competition’s final.

The journey has been remarkable, particularly after Nigeria opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland. The youngsters recovered from that setback, winning five consecutive matches to reach the final.

Their impressive run included victories over Puerto Rico, defending champions North Korea, Mexico and Venezuela before producing a commanding 3-1 win against Brazil in the semi-finals.

Against Brazil, Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the 55th minute before Awawu Bashiru struck twice in the 71st and 80th minutes. Brazil managed a late consolation, but Nigeria held on to seal their historic qualification.

The achievement makes the Flamingos the first African team to reach the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, surpassing their previous best finish of third place in 2022.

Standing between Nigeria and the trophy is Japan, three-time finalists and champions in 2014. The Asian side booked their place after eliminating defending champions North Korea in a dramatic semi-final penalty shootout.

For Nigeria, Saturday’s encounter presents an opportunity to become the first African nation to win the tournament.

Having already broken new ground, the Flamingos will now be hoping to crown their remarkable campaign with a world title and deliver another landmark moment for Nigerian women’s football.
