British-Nigerian singer and songwriter Talay Riley has died after a fatal stabbing in East London, prompting a murder investigation by the Metropolitan Police.
The musician, whose real name was Mark Yinka Orabiyi, suffered the attack on Friday morning in Silvertown, East London. Emergency services responded to reports of a stabbing on Pankhurst Avenue at about 9 a.m. but could not save the 35 year-old songwriter. Police have launched a homicide investigation.
Authorities found another man in his 20s with stab wounds and took him to hospital. Doctors say his injuries are not life threatening while investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Talay’s family confirmed his death in an emotional statement and described the loss as “overwhelming sadness.” They remembered him as a Grammy Award winning songwriter and artist known for his humour, generosity and impact on those around him. The family also thanked the public for messages of support.
Talay built a career spanning more than a decade in the music industry. He signed a publishing deal at 18 and later gained recognition after featuring on Chip’s 2009 single “Look For Me.”
He worked with artists including Usher, Khalid, Kehlani, H.E.R., Trey Songz and Dua Lipa, and earned credits on several successful records.
His brother, music producer Scribz Riley, paid tribute on Instagram, describing Talay as a mentor, inspiration and “a light in so many people’s lives.” He said they spoke about future plans just hours before the attack.
