As Nigeria prepares for key state elections, concerns are growing over the increasing misuse of artificial intelligence and digital platforms to spread misinformation and manipulate public perception.
Barrister Oludotun Sowemimo Speaking on an episode of Spotlight on S24 Television, legal expert Olu warned that the country is entering a dangerous phase of cyber-enabled political interference, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He highlighted rising threats such as deepfakes, cyberstalking, fake news, and coordinated online misinformation campaigns, noting that these tools are already being used to influence voter opinion.
According to him, AI-generated political propaganda and false narratives circulating on platforms like WhatsApp and other social media networks pose serious risks to election integrity and national security.
Olu stressed that the growing sophistication of digital manipulation makes it harder for citizens to distinguish between real and fake information, thereby increasing the vulnerability of the electoral process.
He also called for stronger legal enforcement and greater public awareness, warning that without urgent action, cybercrime could significantly undermine democratic processes in Nigeria.
The legal expert emphasized that both regulators and citizens must adapt quickly to the evolving digital landscape, especially as technology continues to play a larger role in political communication.
The programme underscored the need for proactive measures to protect Nigeria’s information space ahead of critical elections.
