Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the attack on the office of the African Democratic Congress in Ubima, Ikwere Local Government Area of Rivers State, describing it as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement reacting to the incident, Atiku said the destruction of the opposition party’s secretariat represents a dangerous escalation in political tensions.

According to him, the torching of the party office suggests that attempts to weaken the opposition may now be shifting towards physical attacks on party members and their properties.

He warned that such developments go beyond partisan rivalry and could undermine democratic values if not addressed quickly.

“These are not merely attacks on the opposition coalition ADC, but an assault on our democracy,” he said.

Atiku urged the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure the safety of opposition members and their assets across the country.

He also called for an independent investigation into the attack on the ADC office in Rivers State to identify and prosecute those responsible.

According to him, failure to hold perpetrators accountable could embolden further acts of political violence.

The former vice president also said he is awaiting the outcome of investigations into a previous attack involving Peter Obi and other ADC leaders during an event in Benin City last week.

He stressed that protecting opposition figures and political institutions remains essential for sustaining Nigeria’s democratic system.
