TikTok has temporarily suspended its late-night livestreaming feature in Nigeria following a surge in sexually explicit content and exploitation reports on the platform. The move, communicated to users via an in-app notification, is part of a broader safety review to “ensure the platform remains safe and our community stays protected.”

Under the temporary restriction, Nigerian users are unable to host or view LIVE broadcasts during late-night hours, with many accounts showing a “No Access” label between approximately 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. (local time). The limitation also blocked livestreams from other countries during these times.

Late-night streams in Nigeria had increasingly featured sexually explicit acts, erotic performances, and coordinated adult content designed to generate rapid earnings through TikTok’s virtual gifting system, a monetisation feature that allows viewers to send creators digital gifts redeemable for real money.

According to TikTok’s internal enforcement data released earlier in 2025, the platform banned 49,512 live sessions in Nigeria in the second quarter alone for violating livestream and monetisation policies. The company also issued warnings and demonetised millions of other livestreams and penalised creators for guideline breaches.

The suspension is described as temporary, with TikTok yet to specify how long it will remain in place as its safety investigation continues. The company has framed the action as part of its ongoing efforts to reinforce content moderation and deliver a safer environment for its global user base.
