The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested an NSCDC officer over alleged gunfire at Kubwa Market in Abuja.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 25, 2026. Police officers from Kubwa Division responded to a distress call about gunshots at the market.
They arrested the suspect, identified as Onoja Samuel. He holds the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Corps in the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Police recovered a CZ pistol and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition from the suspect.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Samuel went to the market after reports that some traders had assaulted his wife.
An argument reportedly broke out between the suspect and the traders. Police allege that he then fired several shots into the air.
Authorities have not confirmed any deaths or injuries linked to the incident.
The FCT Police Command says the suspect remains in custody. Investigators will determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Police intend to charge him in court after completing their investigation.
The allegations remain unproven. A court has not established the suspect’s guilt.
FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi urged security agencies to improve cooperation across the territory.
He stressed the need for restraint and clear communication between security personnel. He also warned against actions that could endanger the public.
The police say investigations into the Kubwa Market shooting are continuing.
The case has renewed concerns about firearm handling and discipline among security personnel. Authorities are expected to establish the full circumstances of the incident as the investigation progresses.
