President Bola Tinubu plans to present Nigeria’s 2027 budget to the National Assembly before the end of 2026.

The Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, disclosed this on Wednesday, October 28. She spoke after the Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House in Abuja.

Uzoka-Anite said the government was already working on the proposed spending plan. She added that the administration intended to submit it before the year ends.

The presentation will give lawmakers the opportunity to examine the government’s spending priorities for the 2027 fiscal year. However, the minister did not announce a specific date for the presentation.

Meanwhile, the Budget Office of the Federation has introduced stricter requirements for ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) preparing their 2027 budget proposals.

A budget circular dated September 4, 2026, directed MDAs to submit their personnel cost proposals alongside the laws establishing them. The measure aims to prevent fictitious or unauthorised agencies from entering the federal budget.

The directive followed concerns over fictitious agencies uncovered during an investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

In addition, the government restricted personnel cost provisions for agencies whose staff records do not appear on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) or the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).

The proposed year-end presentation comes amid ongoing concerns about Nigeria’s budget timetable and implementation.

Earlier, the Budget Office had targeted September 2026 for submitting the 2027 budget to the National Assembly. However, the government missed that target, according to previous media reports.

Delays in budget presentation and implementation can reduce the time available for lawmakers to scrutinise spending plans. They can also complicate the release of funds and the delivery of capital projects.

Therefore, an early and orderly budget process remains important for effective fiscal planning.

The 2027 budget will outline the Federal Government’s proposed spending and revenue plans for the coming fiscal year. Its details will become clearer when the administration submits the estimates to lawmakers.

The National Assembly will then have to review the proposals before the budget can become law. The legislative process will determine the final allocations and spending priorities.

For now, the government’s stated target is to present the 2027 budget before the end of 2026. The minister has yet to provide a precise presentation date.
