At least 12 security personnel are feared dead following an attack on a Gendarmerie Nationale position in Kirtachi, located in the Tillabéri Region of the Niger Republic.
The incident was reportedly confirmed through a leaked internal military communication dated May 22, 2026, and marked “Secret Defense.”
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, suspected fighters belonging to Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) were responsible for the assault.
The leaked report indicated that the attackers overran the security position and allegedly seized three armed Toyota pickup trucks. One of the vehicles was reportedly mounted with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun, while the remaining two were equipped with M80-type weapons.
The assailants were also said to have carted away seven motorcycles, locally referred to as “Sababu,” alongside military uniforms and other operational equipment.
Preliminary casualty figures contained in the communication revealed that 12 security personnel lost their lives during the attack, while four others remain missing.
The internal document further warned security formations across the area to remain on maximum alert amid concerns over possible fresh attacks ahead of the upcoming Tabaski celebrations.
Authorities in the Niger have yet to officially comment on the reported incident.
