The battle for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title is still ongoing.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), football’s highest legal body, will hear Senegal’s appeal on October 8, 2026 with Senegal wanting the court to overturn CAF’s decision to award the AFCON title to Morocco.
Senegal won the final 1-0 after extra time. Pape Gueye scored the winning goal and appeared to secure the country’s second AFCON trophy.
The controversy began late in the match as Senegal’s players briefly walked off the pitch after the referee awarded Morocco a penalty. They later returned, and Morocco failed to score from the spot.
CAF later reviewed the incident and ruled that Senegal had broken tournament rules. The governing body cancelled the on-field result, awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory, and named the Atlas Lions as the official AFCON champions.
Senegal disagreed with the ruling and appealed to CAS. The federation argues that the result on the pitch should decide the champion, not an administrative decision.
CAS will hear the case in Lausanne, Switzerland with lawyers for both sides presenting their arguments before the panel.
The court will not announce its decision immediately after the hearing. Instead, CAS will issue its ruling at a later date with it verdict been final and binding on all parties.
The decision could reshape the history of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. If CAS rules in Senegal’s favour, the Teranga Lions will regain the title. If the court supports CAF, Morocco will remain the official champions.
