Ecuador Stun Germany to Reach World Cup Knockout Stage

Ecuador pulled off a major upset at the World Cup on Thursday. They beat Germany 2-1 to secure a place in the last 32. Meanwhile, the Netherlands, Japan and Sweden also booked their places in the knockout stage.

Netherlands Finish Top of Group F

The Netherlands ended the group stage with a 3-1 win over Tunisia. The victory helped the Dutch finish first in Group F.

Japan finished second after drawing 1-1 with Sweden. Sweden also advanced as one of the best third-placed teams.

The Netherlands will face Morocco in the last 32. Japan will take on Group C winners Brazil for a place in the round of 16.

Ecuador Produce Stunning Comeback

Ecuador shocked Germany at MetLife Stadium in one of the biggest surprises of the tournament.

Germany took the lead after only two minutes. Leroy Sane scored, although the goal caused controversy.

Ecuador responded well. Nilson Angulo scored the equaliser and brought his side back into the game.

The winning goal arrived in the 77th minute. Gonzalo Plata finished from close range to give Ecuador a famous 2-1 victory.

The result lifted Ecuador to four points in Group E. That was enough to send them through as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Beccacece Praises His Players

Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece praised his players after the match.

“The significance of this is not for me, it is for the people,” he said.

“The players gave great happiness to the people. We have to enjoy it and celebrate.”

The Argentine coach said the victory belonged to the fans and the country.

Germany Already Through

Germany had already secured first place in Group E. The team beat Ivory Coast and Curacao in their earlier matches.

Despite the defeat, Germany still advanced to the knockout stage as group winners.

Ecuador’s victory was one of the biggest shocks of the tournament. The South Americans now head into the last 32 full of confidence.
