The Kano State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to mark the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approved the holiday on Monday. The Office of the Head of Civil Service announced the decision in a circular dated June 15, 2026.

The circular directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), government-owned institutions, and parastatals to observe the holiday.

Safiyya Ali Suleiman, Director of Administration and General Services, signed the circular on behalf of the Head of Civil Service.

In addition, the state government urged residents to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and development in Kano State and across Nigeria.

Why Hijrah 1448AH Matters

The Islamic New Year begins with the month of Muharram, one of the most important months in the Islamic calendar.

The Hijrah commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his followers from Mecca to Medina. As a result, the event marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.

Muslims around the world observe the occasion through prayers, reflection, and acts of worship. Many also use the period to renew their commitment to faith and community values.

Government Calls for Unity and Reflection

Furthermore, the Kano State Government encouraged residents to embrace the lessons of the Islamic New Year.

The government said the occasion offers an opportunity to reflect on values such as faith, sacrifice, patience, and perseverance.

Meanwhile, religious leaders across Kano are expected to hold special prayers and sermons to mark the beginning of Hijrah 1448AH.

As Muslims celebrate the Islamic New Year, many will also pray for peace, progress, and national unity.
