At least 30 travelers were reportedly killed after heavily armed bandits ambushed vehicles along the Magami–Dansadau highway in Zamfara State. The deadly attack happened late Sunday and is being described as one of the worst highway massacres in the region this year.
Reports say the victims included ordinary commuters, local hunters, and a member of the community protection guard. Survivors said gunmen opened fire indiscriminately on moving vehicles, causing panic and chaos along the road.
According to local security sources, community guards and security operatives engaged the attackers in a gun battle shortly after the ambush. Officials claimed several bandits were also neutralized during the exchange, although no exact figure has been released.
The Magami–Dansadau highway has repeatedly witnessed deadly attacks, kidnappings, and robberies linked to armed bandit groups operating across Zamfara forests. Residents say many travelers now avoid the route after dark because of persistent insecurity.
The latest killings have reignited concerns about the worsening security crisis in Nigeria’s northwest. Despite ongoing military operations in Zamfara, attacks on highways and rural communities continue to claim lives.
Local residents say fear has spread across nearby communities following the ambush. Families of victims are mourning loved ones while injured survivors reportedly receive treatment in nearby health facilities.
As of press time, the Zamfara State Government had not released a detailed official statement on the attack. Security agencies, however, are said to be intensifying operations in the area to prevent further violence.
Bandit violence has remained a major security challenge across Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna, and neighboring states, with thousands displaced by years of attacks, kidnappings, and rural raids.
