Gombe State University has recorded a milestone in academic innovation with the successful hosting of its first-ever TEDx event, themed “Unboxed Minds.”

The event, held on April 20, 2026, was convened under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sani Ahmed Yauta, marking a significant step in the institution’s effort to deepen global engagement and intellectual discourse.

The maiden edition assembled a diverse group of speakers drawn from students, alumni, academic staff, and public figures. Presentations centered on challenging entrenched perspectives and advancing transformative ideas aligned with the TEDx philosophy of “ideas worth spreading.”

Key sessions interrogated social and philosophical constructs through themes such as “Unlearning the Names We Give Women,” “Minority Is a Mindset,” and “Why Laws Need Conscience.” These discussions encouraged critical reflection on identity, societal labeling, and ethical responsibility in governance and daily life.

Beyond formal talks, the programme incorporated spoken word, poetry, and other artistic performances designed to reinforce the central theme of intellectual liberation. Each segment adhered to the standard TEDx format—concise, high-impact, and concept-driven.

In his remarks, Prof. Yauta commended the initiative, emphasizing the role of student-led platforms in advancing the university’s global relevance. He reiterated the institution’s commitment to exposing students to international best practices and contemporary intellectual trends.

The event also had in attendance the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Danladi Mohammed Umar, alongside other senior academic staff, reflecting institutional backing for innovation and cross-disciplinary dialogue.

The successful execution of TEDx at GSU signals a broader institutional shift toward positioning the university as a hub for creativity, critical thinking, and global conversations, where students function not only as learners but as active contributors to knowledge production and societal change.
