A tragic incident in the Mediterranean has left more than 80 migrants missing after a boat capsized while departing Libya, the United Nations migration agency reports.
The vessel, carrying around 120 people, set off from Tajoura in northwestern Libya. Severe weather caused the boat to take on water and overturn, leaving dozens unaccounted for.
Rescue teams saved 32 survivors and transferred them to Lampedusa, Italy. Authorities recovered at least two bodies. The death toll may rise as search efforts continue.
This disaster highlights the dangers of the central Mediterranean route, one of the world’s deadliest paths for migrants. Libya remains a major departure point for people fleeing conflict, poverty, and instability across Africa and the Middle East.
The tragedy comes just days after a similar incident near Lampedusa, where dozens of migrants were rescued while others died.
Humanitarian groups and international agencies continue to warn about the growing number of fatalities along this route as migrants risk their lives seeking safety and better living conditions.
