A fire outbreak has destroyed a section of the female hostel at the School of Health Science and Technology, Jahun, affecting properties belonging to 252 students.

The Jigawa State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muhammad Abdullahi Kainuwa, confirmed the incident in an interview with Freedom Radio, stating that the fire occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to him, the incident was limited to a room occupied by students in the same class. He noted that no lives were lost and no major injuries were recorded, although the fire completely destroyed the room and students’ belongings.

Kainuwa explained that following an emergency meeting with the school management and other key stakeholders, authorities resolved to grant the affected students a two-week break. He said the decision was aimed at calming parents’ concerns while giving the government time to rehabilitate the damaged facility and provide a more conducive environment for learning.

He further disclosed that the state government, in collaboration with the Jahun Local Government Council, had already taken immediate relief measures. This includes arranging transportation for the affected students to return home and providing them with essential support items such as clothing materials and other basic needs ahead of further assistance.

The commissioner assured that the government remains committed to the welfare and safety of students, adding that steps are being taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

The cause of the fire has yet to be officially disclosed.
