Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), has come under criticism over its decision to award an honorary Doctor of Letters degree to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The honour is scheduled for April 11, 2026, during the university’s 25th-anniversary combined convocation.

While Professor Terhemba Shija praised the choice, describing Hassan as an “amazon,” the university has not explained the criteria used for selecting her. It has also remained silent on concerns about the ethical implications of the award.

The controversy comes at a sensitive time.

In February 2026, the National Universities Commission (NUC) warned universities against the indiscriminate award of honorary degrees. The directive was aimed at protecting academic integrity.

Critics say NSUK’s decision appears to ignore this warning.

President Hassan’s administration has faced international scrutiny following Tanzania’s October 2025 elections.

The election, which gave her a 98% victory, has been widely criticised. Opposition figures, including Tundu Lissu, were reportedly detained.

Investigations by global organisations have raised further concerns. Reports from CNN and Human Rights Watch allege the use of force against civilians.

There are also claims of mass graves and widespread casualties, particularly in Dar es Salaam.

However, President Hassan has dismissed the reports, describing the unrest as “manufactured violence.”

Reactions in Nigeria have been swift. Many social media users have criticised NSUK for honouring a leader facing such allegations. Some described the decision as a blow to academic credibility.

Education analysts have also warned that ignoring established standards could damage the university’s global reputation.

They argue that institutions must uphold transparency when awarding honorary degrees.
