At least nine soldiers and one police officer have reportedly died following a deadly ambush by suspected gunmen in Kebbi State.
Nasir Idris confirmed the attack, which occurred on Tuesday night in Shanga Local Government Area.
According to eyewitnesses, the attack took place in Giro Masa community, where armed assailants suddenly targeted security operatives.
The gunmen had reportedly operated in the area for some time. However, security forces traced them to a construction company yard after receiving a tip-off from residents.
As a result, troops moved to secure the location but ran into an ambush along the way.
The attack left several security personnel dead, including soldiers and a police officer. Earlier reports also indicated civilian casualties.
In addition, the attackers set two military trucks on fire during the assault.
Residents described the incident as chaotic and terrifying, with many still in shock after the violence.
Meanwhile, Nasir Idris strongly condemned the killings and described the incident as barbaric.
He visited victims at the Federal Teaching Hospital Birnin Kebbi, where the injured received treatment.
“This is a sad incident. These are the soldiers who protect the lives of Kebbi residents, yet they found themselves in this situation,” he said.
The governor assured that the state government will cover medical bills for the injured and support families of the deceased.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving security across the state.
Afterward, he visited the scene of the attack for an on-the-spot assessment.
However, military authorities have not issued an official statement on the incident as of the time of reporting.
Meanwhile, attacks by armed groups continue across northern Nigeria.
In recent months, several incidents have resulted in heavy casualties among troops. For example, the Nigerian Army confirmed the killing of 17 soldiers during a clash with suspected bandits in Niger State in June 2025.
Similarly, insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP have carried out repeated attacks on military formations in the North-East.
The latest attack highlights ongoing security challenges in Kebbi State and beyond.
As violence persists, authorities face increasing pressure to strengthen intelligence, protect communities, and prevent further attacks.
