The Federal Ministry of Education Nigeria has partnered with the National Population Commission Nigeria to link birth registration with school enrolment.
The goal is to improve education planning across the country. Officials say reliable population data will help the government make better decisions.
The announcement was shared in a statement by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations.
Why Birth Data Matters For Education
Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, said accurate population records are essential for planning.
According to him, credible data will guide school siting and teacher deployment. It will also support proper enrolment projections and fair resource allocation.
As a result, authorities expect better distribution of educational facilities nationwide.
Under the new plan, birth registration will become part of school admission processes.
The minister explained that this step will promote correct age placement for pupils. It will also strengthen the integrity of academic records.
However, he stressed that enforcement will follow wider access to registration services. This approach aims to avoid creating barriers for families.
Digital Integration For Better Tracking
The initiative will also focus on digital integration between both agencies.
Officials say the system will improve transparency in enrolment data. In addition, it will help track enrolment trends and identify school dropouts early.
Therefore, policymakers can respond faster to emerging education gaps.
NPC Reaffirms Commitment
Chairman of the National Population Commission Nigeria, Aminu Yusuf, reaffirmed the commission’s responsibility for managing Nigeria’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system.
He noted that over 4,000 registration centres are currently operating across the country. Furthermore, digital upgrades are ongoing to strengthen data management.
Joint Technical Working Group Established
Both institutions agreed to create a Joint Technical Working Group.
The group will harmonise verification procedures and ensure database interoperability. In other words, both agencies will align their systems to share accurate information securely.
This collaboration is expected to reduce duplication and improve data reliability.

The partnership reflects the Federal Government’s push for evidence-based education reform.
