Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has criticised plans to disconnect the Presidential Villa from Nigeria’s national power grid.
He recalled President Bola Tinubu’s campaign promise to provide steady electricity within four years or forfeit re-election.
Obi said Nigerians embraced that pledge because it raised hopes for reliable electricity, business stability and national development.
He argued that disconnecting Aso Rock from the national grid contradicts that promise and reflects declining confidence in public power supply.

Obi cited budget provisions allocating ₦10 billion for solar power at the Presidential Villa in 2025.
He also referenced further allocations in the 2026 budget for maintenance and upgrade of solar infrastructure at the seat of power.
According to Obi, abandoning the national grid sends the wrong signal about the government’s commitment to fixing Nigeria’s electricity system.
He said government institutions should strengthen the grid rather than isolate themselves from its challenges.
Obi warned that if leaders disconnect from public services, ordinary Nigerians may never enjoy reliable electricity.
He acknowledged that renewable energy development is necessary and supports long-term sustainability goals.
However, he stressed that leadership must not secure comfort for itself while citizens remain trapped in darkness.
Obi said Nigerians expect effort, transparency and measurable progress, even when promises cannot be fully achieved.
He concluded that leadership should share the people’s struggles and not detach itself from their daily realities.
