Shettima Returns to Abuja After 39th AU Summit

Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after representing Nigeria at the 39th African Union Summit.

He attended the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Ethiopia.

The summit was organised by the African Union in Addis Ababa.

The meeting held between February 14 and 15, 2026, with focus on Africa’s development priorities.

The summit theme centred on sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems under Africa’s Agenda 2063 framework.

Senator Shettima also attended the 30th African Union General Assembly during the official engagements.

He participated in high-level side events and held bilateral meetings with political and business leaders.

The discussions aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic and strategic relations across African countries.

The Vice President also met António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Guterres urged Nigeria to lead Africa’s campaign for a fairer global order and stronger international representation.

On behalf of Bola Tinubu, Shettima called for health security sovereignty across African nations.

He said Africa must reduce dependence on foreign aid and build strong local health systems.

At a side event on health security, Shettima stressed the need to protect Africans from fragile global supply chains.

He described reliable healthcare as vital to Africa’s stability, development and long-term self-reliance.
