Nigeria has been ranked the 36th most corrupt country in the world, according to the 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International on Tuesday.

The report placed Nigeria 142nd out of 182 countries, with a score of 26 out of 100, unchanged from its 2024 performance.

Despite retaining the same score, Nigeria dropped two places from its previous ranking of 140th, indicating stalled progress in the fight against corruption.

Transparency International noted that Nigeria’s score remains well below the global average of 42, as more than two-thirds of countries assessed scored below 50.

Within Africa, Nigeria ranked behind 33 other countries, including Seychelles, Cabo Verde, Botswana, Rwanda, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, and Egypt.

Seychelles topped the African ranking with a score of 68, followed by Cabo Verde (62) and Botswana and Rwanda with 58 points each.

Reacting, former senator Shehu Sani criticised the index, accusing Transparency International of ignoring corruption in Western countries where looted funds from developing nations are often kept.
