Heavy rainfall and flash floods have affected several communities across Damaturu, Nguru, Machina and Bursari Local Government Areas of Yobe State, damaging homes and leaving many families displaced.
The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) disclosed this in a flash flood incident report issued on Sunday, saying it received multiple distress calls from community leaders, security agencies and local government authorities following torrential rainfall that triggered flooding across the affected areas.
According to SEMA, communities already verified include Moduri, Abbari Sabon Kwalta, Malari Sabon Kwalta, Pompomari, Sumsumma, Nayinawa and nearby settlements in Damaturu Local Government Area.
In Nguru LGA, the floods affected New Side, Best Center, Balanguwa Road and several communities spread across nine wards.
The agency also confirmed flooding in Turbangini and Dinani/Lawanti Ward in Bursari LGA, as well as Alhaji Madi Street, Hausari and Machina town in Machina LGA.
SEMA explained that the current list covers only communities that have been officially reported and verified, adding that additional locations may be confirmed as assessment teams continue their work.
Preliminary findings indicate that numerous houses sustained varying degrees of damage, although officials are still assessing the full extent of the disaster.
The agency said it is yet to determine the exact number of affected households, displaced persons and any injuries resulting from the floods.
SEMA assured residents that comprehensive assessment reports would be released once verification is completed to support emergency response and recovery efforts.
The agency also urged residents to remain vigilant throughout the rainy season by staying indoors during heavy rainfall, avoiding unnecessary travel and keeping away from flood-prone areas such as riverbanks, drainage channels and low-lying communities.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as rainfall persists across parts of the state.
