Students of Obafemi Awolowo University Students’ Union staged a protest on Tuesday, demanding urgent action on welfare and academic challenges. Videos from the protest ground showed large numbers of students marching and chanting at the main gate.

The protesters insisted they organized a peaceful demonstration and aimed to restore normal campus life. The union leadership, led by President Adelani David and General Secretary Habeeb Oke Isa, announced the protest in a statement.

They stated that students would block major roads and campus gates until authorities address their demands. “The Students’ Union staged a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 6 a.m., with the intention to block major roads and gates leading to the campus until our demands are met,” the statement read.

The leaders emphasized that students would follow the long-standing tradition of peaceful and orderly protests at Great Ife. They also urged all students to participate actively while maintaining discipline.

The protest follows rising frustration over transportation difficulties, accommodation shortages, and disruptions caused by the school’s e-portal upgrade. Earlier, the union rejected a plan to evacuate students from Awolowo Hall Blocks 7 and 8 for renovation. The union criticized the timing and warned that the plan lacked proper notice, preparation, and alternative housing arrangements.

The leadership also faulted the e-portal upgrade, stressing that many students still cannot register courses or access results weeks into the semester. Despite the tension, the union reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful engagement but warned that students are losing patience. “We cannot continue to watch students suffer unnecessarily.

The ball now lies with the university management to provide immediate and workable solutions,” the union stated
