Spain have become the first nation to hold both the FIFA Men’s World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup titles at the same time.
FIFA confirmed the historic achievement on Sunday after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in New York.
The world football governing body celebrated the milestone in a post on its official X account.
“History-makers Spain have become the first nation to hold both the FIFA World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup simultaneously,” FIFA said.
Spain’s latest success came three years after the country’s women’s team won the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Spanish women defeated England 1-0 in the final in Sydney, Australia. Olga Carmona scored the winning goal to secure the nation’s first women’s world title.
Meanwhile, Spain’s victory over Argentina earned the men’s team a second FIFA World Cup title. Their first triumph came at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
By winning the 2026 World Cup while remaining the reigning women’s world champions, Spain achieved a feat no other nation has accomplished.
Era of Spanish Football Dominance
Spain’s historic double reflects the country’s recent success in international football.
In addition to holding both World Cup trophies, Spain’s men’s team won the UEFA European Championship in 2024.
The women’s national team has also remained among the world’s best since lifting its maiden Women’s World Cup title in 2023.
The achievement further strengthens Spain’s reputation as one of the leading football nations in both the men’s and women’s game.
