England suffered a setback at the World Cup after Ghana held them to a 0-0 draw in Group L on Tuesday.
Thomas Tuchel’s side failed to build on their opening 4-2 win over Croatia. The result leaves both teams on four points with one group match remaining.
Although England remain close to qualifying for the knockout stage, they still need a good result against Panama to finish as group winners.
England Struggle in Attack
England controlled possession for most of the match. They also created far more chances than Ghana.
The Three Lions attempted 19 shots, while Ghana managed only two. However, England found it difficult to break down Ghana’s defence.
Nico O’Reilly came closest to scoring late in the game. His header struck the crossbar and bounced away.
England’s attack lacked sharpness despite spending long periods in control.
Ghana Stand Firm
Ghana produced a disciplined defensive display throughout the match.
Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare impressed with several important saves. The Black Stars remained organised and denied England clear scoring opportunities.
The African side, ranked 73rd in the world, defended strongly against opponents ranked much higher.
Their determination earned them a valuable point.
Group L Still Open
The draw means England and Ghana both have four points in Group L.
Qualification to the next round appears likely for both teams. However, the battle for first place remains undecided.
England will face Panama in their final group match at the MetLife Stadium on Saturday.
England Need Improvement
The performance raised questions about England’s chances of winning the tournament.
In cool and damp conditions, Tuchel’s side looked slow and lacked creativity. The display reminded many fans of England’s struggles during Euro 2024.
Despite the disappointing result, England remain unbeaten against African teams at the World Cup.
Ghana, meanwhile, earned praise for their hard work and defensive organization.
