Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Portugal beat Uzbekistan 5-0 on Tuesday to move closer to the World Cup knockout stage.
The Portugal captain made history by becoming the first player to score in six different World Cups. The 41-year-old also answered his critics after what he described as a “dark week.”
Ronaldo Breaks World Cup Record
Ronaldo opened the scoring after only six minutes in Houston. He calmly finished from close range and celebrated with his famous “Siu” in front of 68,777 fans.
The goal made Ronaldo the first player to score in six World Cup tournaments. His record stretches from 2006 to 2026.
Nuno Mendes doubled Portugal’s lead midway through the first half. Ronaldo then scored again six minutes before the break with a composed finish.
His brace took his World Cup tally to 10 goals. He now holds the record for the most World Cup goals by a Portuguese player, passing the legendary Eusebio.
Ronaldo Speaks After Difficult Week
After the match, Ronaldo admitted that he struggled with criticism following Portugal’s opening draw against DR Congo.
“It was a difficult week, a dark week. It seemed like I was already retired from football,” Ronaldo said.
“But I kept working because I believe in hard work. It was hard, but we’re back.”
The forward also shouted, “I’m back, I’m back,” after scoring his second goal.
Critics Questioned the Veteran
Ronaldo entered the tournament with 143 international goals, the highest total in men’s football.
However, he failed to score in Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo. He missed two good chances and received criticism from fans and pundits.
Several supporters called for coach Roberto Martinez to leave him out of the starting lineup.
At the same time, stars such as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane all started the tournament strongly.
Despite the criticism, Martinez continued to support his captain.
Portugal Close In on Last 16
Fans gave Ronaldo a warm welcome before kickoff at Houston Stadium. They also cheered loudly whenever he appeared on the giant screens.
Portugal controlled the match and moved close to securing a place in the knockout rounds.
“It’s always nice to break records, but my goal is to help the national team achieve its objectives,” Ronaldo said.
His two goals and historic achievement have given Portugal fresh momentum as they continue their World Cup campaign.
