Kylian Mbappé scored two goals as France started their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Senegal on Tuesday.
The Group I match took place at the New York/New Jersey Stadium. It also revived memories of Senegal’s famous 1-0 victory over France at the 2002 World Cup.
This time, France made sure history did not repeat itself.
Both teams played carefully in the first half. Chances were limited as the two sides focused on staying organised at the back.
France came out stronger after the break. Mbappé opened the scoring and gave Les Bleus the lead.
Michael Olise and Bradley Barcola played key roles in France’s attack. Their pace and creativity caused problems for Senegal’s defence and helped France control the game.
France increased their advantage as the pressure grew. Mbappé then grabbed his second goal to put his side firmly in command.
Senegal refused to give up. Ibrahim Mbaye scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time after receiving a pass from substitute Iliman Ndiaye.
The late goal gave Senegal hope, but France held on to secure all three points.
The victory puts France in a strong position in Group I. Senegal will now turn their attention to their next match as they look to bounce back from defeat.
