Nigeria Approves Salary Increase, New Benefits for Civil Servants

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a wide-ranging salary and welfare package for civil servants.

The reforms include higher allowances, improved benefits, and a new retirement exit scheme designed to boost morale and financial stability across the public service.

Officials say the move responds to rising living costs and long-standing demands from workers.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, announced the decision in Abuja.

She explained that the reforms cover officers on the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure and related frameworks.

According to her, the adjustments will reflect across all grade levels, ensuring that both junior and senior officers see a noticeable increase in their take-home pay.

She said the new structure aims to create a more balanced and rewarding pay system within the service.

The government has also reviewed several major allowances.

These include duty tour allowance, estacode, and book allowance, which are critical for official assignments and professional development.

Walson-Jack said the review aligns with provisions in the Public Service Rules and reflects current economic realities.

She noted that the update is part of a broader effort to improve working conditions and support career growth.

A key highlight of the reform is the approval of 100 percent Duty Tour Allowance for training.

Civil servants will now receive full allowance when attending approved training programmes.

This applies even when the training takes place within their regular duty location.

Officials say the decision removes financial barriers that often discourage participation in capacity-building programmes.

The government has introduced a new exit benefit for retiring civil servants.

Under the scheme, workers will receive 100 percent of their total annual earnings as a one-time benefit at retirement.

Walson-Jack said the policy takes effect from January 1, 2026.

She clarified that the payment is separate from pension benefits and is meant to provide additional financial support after service.

The reforms also include the activation of the Employee Compensation Scheme.

This programme offers support to workers who suffer job-related injuries or whose families face loss due to workplace incidents.

Officials say the scheme ensures that civil servants and their dependents are better protected against unexpected risks.

The government says the reforms reflect a renewed focus on worker welfare and human capital development.

Officials believe improved pay and benefits will help retain skilled professionals within the civil service.

They also expect the changes to improve motivation, efficiency, and overall productivity.

The new package forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the public service.

Authorities say the goal is to improve service delivery and make government institutions more effective.

They also aim to build a system that rewards performance while supporting long-term career growth.
