Ilhan Omar Urges End Sudan Arms Flow

U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has renewed calls for a shift in Western policy on Sudan, warning that continued external support and arms transfers are worsening the country’s brutal conflict.

In a strong statement, Omar argued that the United States and its Gulf allies possess the leverage to help end the war, but instead, current dynamics are contributing to the flow of weapons to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a group widely accused of committing serious human rights abuses.

She said this pattern of engagement is prolonging “immense suffering” for civilians caught in the conflict, stressing that it is inconsistent for countries claiming to support peace and stability to simultaneously enable armed actors on the ground.

According to her, “The U.S. and Gulf allies could help end Sudan’s war, but instead we enable weapons to reach the genocidal RSF, prolonging immense suffering. We can’t be credible peacemakers while fueling conflict.”

Omar further emphasized that any foreign policy framework claiming to prioritize human rights must avoid complicity in violations, adding that the credibility of international actors depends on aligning actions with stated values.

Her remarks add to growing international concern over the Sudanese conflict, where competing armed factions have intensified violence, triggering one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
