Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, marking a major political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor announced his defection on Saturday at the Bauchi Government House. He was joined by members of the PDP loyal to the Tanimu Turaki-led executives.
Speaking at the event, Mohammed said the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders.
“We have taken a firm and strategic decision to join the APM,” he stated.
He explained that the move was aimed at securing electoral victory and providing a credible political alternative for the people.
According to him, the decision was also driven by the need to maintain political momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We cannot allow our people to be without a viable platform,” the governor added.
The National Chairman of the party, Yusuf Dantalle, formally received the governor into the APM.
He presented Mohammed with the party’s membership card, flag, and symbolic logo.
In response, the governor expressed gratitude to the PDP for its role in his political journey. He noted that the party provided the platform for his election in 2019 and re-election in 2023.
Mohammed’s defection follows months of speculation about his political future amid internal challenges within the PDP.
Notably, he previously served as Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.
His exit leaves a significant gap in the opposition party and signals a major realignment in Bauchi State politics.
Meanwhile, political observers say the move could reshape alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
The defection highlights shifting political dynamics in Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
With the governor now in the APM, attention is expected to focus on how the party positions itself as a competitive force in the upcoming elections.
