The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rescued two abandoned babies, a boy and a girl, in separate incidents in Abuja, with investigations underway to identify their mothers and relatives.
The babies were discovered in Kurudu and Gwagwalada on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, after residents heard them crying and alerted the police.
The first incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on Obodo Street, Kurudu, when a resident identified as Innocent heard a baby crying in the area.
According to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, Innocent followed the sound and discovered a baby boy inside a carton box with a cloth wrapped around him. He immediately rushed to the Kurudu Police Station to report the discovery.
Police officers subsequently visited the area, accompanied by personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care Department, and rescued the child.
The baby boy was taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention, where doctors examined him and confirmed that he was in stable condition.
The police have since launched an investigation to establish who abandoned the child and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Later the same night, another abandoned baby was rescued in Gwagwalada.
At about 9:40 p.m., a resident identified as Ibrahim heard a baby crying outside his gate. When he went outside to investigate, he found a baby girl and alerted other residents, who joined him in helping to secure the child.
Ibrahim reported the discovery at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15 p.m., after which officers from the Juveniles and Women Care Department took the baby to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
The baby girl received medical attention and remains under care while authorities work to determine the appropriate arrangements for her welfare.
The FCT Police Command is investigating both cases and working to identify the babies’ mothers, relatives or other family members.
Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh commended Innocent, Ibrahim and other residents for responding quickly after discovering the children. She urged members of the public with information about the babies or their families to contact the nearest police station or the FCT Police Public Relations Officer.
The Command said credible information could help authorities reunite the children with their families where appropriate and ensure their safety and wellbeing.
